The Role of Fat Mass
Excess fat mass, particularly visceral fat, is strongly linked to metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality (Pischon et al., 2008). Visceral fat contributes to chronic inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which accelerate ageing and increase the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Additionally, greater muscle mass helps combat sarcopenia, a condition that contributes to frailty and falls in older adults.

Research suggests that maintaining a higher lean mass while keeping fat mass within a healthy range leads to better health outcomes and longer life expectancy. Resistance training and adequate protein intake are key strategies for preserving muscle mass, while managing fat levels through diet and activity remains crucial for reducing disease risk.
