RMR

Test

Personalises calorie needs for health goals by assessing energy expenditure.

Why measure it! A measure of energy expenditure at rest gives you the ability to personalise food requirements your body requires to optimise your health goals whether that be for fat loss or increasing lean mass.

Understanding Metabolism and Its Role in Energy Expenditure

You probably think of metabolism as how quickly your body burns calories, but technically it’s much more than just that. Metabolism refers to a range of biological processes taking place within your body’s cells and how many calories it takes to do that work. For example, making hormones, pumping blood to breathing and brain function. Metabolism (TDEE- total daily energy expenditure) is made up of three variables: your resting metabolic rate (RMR), the thermic effect of food, and the thermic effect of physical activity.

First up is RMR, which accounts for approximately 60 to 75% of your total daily energy expenditure. And it’s pretty much what it sounds like: the number of calories your body uses when you’re just sitting around doing nothing. Then there’s the thermic effect of food, a term for the number of calories you burn by chewing and digesting what you eat and absorbing and storing those nutrients. It accounts for about 10% of your TDEE. Lastly, there’s the thermic effect of physical activity, meaning how much energy you use by being active. That comprises about 15 to 30% of the amount of energy you burn through every day—and it includes everything you do, including gym sessions, walking the dog and washing dishes, even fidgeting.

RMR can differ significantly between individuals, more specifically, how much muscle and body fat you have. The bigger you are, the more cells your body has to fuel, and the more energy you’ll burn at rest. Up to 43% of the variation in RMR between individuals can be attributed to differences in the size of their kidneys, muscles, brain and liver.

The RMR Test

To complete the test, you will be required to lay on a bed for up to 20 minutes while we place what’s termed a “ventilated hood” over you that is connected to a gas analyser, and a heart rate monitor. No special attire is required but it may be helpful to wear something comfortable to help stay relaxed during the test.

To prepare for the test you must adhere to the following steps:

  • At least 5 hours of fasting prior to the test
  • No intense exercise (>1 hour) 24 hours before the test
  • No caffeine, tobacco or stimulating drinks for at least 5 hours prior to the test
  • Continue medications as usual — be prepared to discuss before your test begins
